Research Experience
Research Associate (PostDoc)
Oregon State University, College of Earth, Oceans and Atmospheric Sciences 2015-current
PI: Dr Byron Crump, Oregon State University
- Large-scale analysis of aquatic microbial and viral communities in rivers and estuaries
Postdoctoral Scholar 2012-2015
Oregon State University, Department of Microbiology
PI: Dr Rebecca L Vega Thurber, Oregon State University
- Initiated fieldwork and sample collection to study the ecology and diversity of marine viruses in coral reefs of Florida Keys and French Polynesia
- Adapted high-throughput sequencing of multiplexed gene amplicons to reveal phylogenetic composition, biogeographic patterns and diversity of viruses in distinct reef habitats
- Assessed the ecological impacts of viruses on microbial mortality and biogeochemical cycling in oligotrophic reef ecosystems
- Analyzed virus-microbe interactions through network and multivariate statistical analyses
- Applied DNA-based fluorescent sorting to genetically characterize viruses associated with marine phytoplankton isolates
Graduate Research Assistant 2003-2011
University of British Columbia, Department of Earth & Ocean Sciences
PI: Prof Curtis A Suttle
- Conducted fieldwork and sample collection to study the ecology and diversity of marine viruses on the Canadian Arctic Shelf as part of the Canadian Arctic Shelf Exchange Study (CASES) project
- Applied DNA-based fluorescent techniques to detect and characterize spatiotemporal distribution of viral subsets in natural microbial assemblages
- Examined ecological drivers of viral distribution and production across environmental gradients
- Assessed viral-mediated mortality of microbes and impacts on biogeochemical cycling in the Arctic shelf waters
- Adapted molecular DNA-based fingerprint technique (DGGE) and high-throughput sequencing to reveal viral phylogenetic composition and biogeography in polar oceans
Graduate Research Assistant 2000-2003
Institut des Sciences de la Mer, University of Quebec at Rimouski
PIs: Prof Serge Demers & Prof Emilien Pelletier
- Assessed the effects of oil-associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and solar ultraviolet-B radiation on natural microbial assemblages during a factorial mesocosm time-series experiment
- Applied epifluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry to enumerate autotrophic and heterotrophic marine microbes
- Used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis to measure the biodegradation of PAHs
Research Assistant 1999-2000
University of La Réunion, Réunion Island
PI: Prof Chantal Conand
Co-PI: Dr Jean Turquet and Dr Jean-Pascal Quod at l'ARVAM
- Studied the extent of coral bleaching and colonization patterns of macroalgae harbouring epiphytic harmful dinoflagellates implicated in ciguatera fish poisoning at two sites on the fringing coral reefs of Réunion Island. Artificial reef structures were deployed and monitored for 9 months
